WHAT IS TENEBRIS?

테네브리스 시리즈의 시작인 1권은 주로 캐릭터와 세계관, 앞으로 벌어질 사건들을 예고하면서 주인공 유리의 내면에 대한 심리 묘사와 개인적인 갈등, 그리고 테네브리스의 주 무대인 "이나실"의 소개에 대해 주로 다루고 있다.

   블러드크라운 제국의 주술사이자 꽤 뛰어난 검술 실력을 가진 주인공 "유리"는, 어렸을 적 위험으로부터 자신을 구해준 스승 진율과 식구, 동료들과 함께 수도에 위치한 '반월당'이라는 사당에서 살고 있다. 학대에서 벗어나 평화로운 날을 보내던 도중, 그녀는 아름다운 마법사 청년 '미르'와 사랑에 빠진다. 

   미르를 영 탐탁지 않게 생각하던 진율의 반대에도 불구하고 유리는 그의 연인이 되어 사당을 떠난다. 그러나 이후 그녀는 미르가 사실 아름다운 모습의 가면을 쓴 살인마였다는 사실을 알게 된다. 미르는 진실을 알아챈 유리를 지하실에 가두고 마법으로 고문을 하면서, 죽은 희생자들의 시체와 바닥에 고인 핏물을 강제로 보게 하는 등 그녀를 괴롭게 만든다.

   두려움에 휩싸인 유리는 운 좋게 기회를 엿보고 탈출하여 사당으로 도망친다. 그러나 끝까지 그녀를 쫓아온 미르에 의해 진율과 사당 식구들 절반이 살해당하고, 반월당은 그의 마법에 의해 잿더미가 되어버린다. 신을 모시고 영혼을 인도하는 신성한 일을 하는 주술사를 살해하고, 그들의 보금자리를 불태웠다는 신성모독죄로 미르는 황제의 명령에 의해 참수를 당한다. 

  이후 유리는 반월당 살인, 살해 사건에서 살아남은 주술사 동료들과 마찰을 빚는다. 특히 가장 친한 친구이자 동료였던 선우와 갈등이 극에 달하면서, 유리는 결국 수도를 떠나 방랑자가 된다.

   4년 동안 제국을 방황하던 유리는 진율에 대한 그리움 등으로 오랜만에 수도로 돌아온다. 그러나 수도에는 무언가 심상치 않은 기운이 도사리고 있다. 사람들은 근래 일어나고 있는 살인 사건에 대해 이야기하고, 유리는 끔찍한 과거의 기억을 되살리는 사건들을 마주하며 미르를 떠올리게 된다. 

  그녀는 진율에 대한 그리움과 죄책감, 고통스러운 과거의 기억 때문에 죽으려는 결심을 하고 주술사 공동묘지 절벽에서 뛰어내린다. 그러나 어떤 마법사가 그녀의 목숨을 구한다. 하지만 그가 유리를 구한 이유는 감히 신을 모시는 주술사들이 잠드는 신성한 곳에서 목숨을 버리려 했다는, "신성모독"적인 그녀의 행동이 역겨워서였고, 결코 그녀를 선의로 구한 것은 아니었다. 마법사 남자는 죽으려면 다른 곳에 가서 죽으라는 말을 남기고 떠난다. 유리는 그의 말을 무시하고 다시 뛰어내리려고 하나, 용기가 나지 않아 포기한다.

   술로 매일을 지새우며 보낸 탓에 주머니가 가벼워진 유리는 일거리를 찾아 게시판을 기웃거린다. 그녀는 한 공고문에 적힌 곳으로 요괴 퇴치 의뢰를 하러 간다. 그런데 유리는 찾아간 곳에서 이상하게 익숙한 얼굴의 남자를 보게 되고, 요괴 퇴치 의뢰 공고문을 올린 사람이 바로 전날에 자신을 구했던 마법사, "카이"임을 알게 된다. 유리는 주머니 사정 때문에 하는 수 없이 카이를 위해 일을 하기로 결정하고 그와 계약을 맺는다.

  계약이 성사되고 시간이 어느 정도 흐른 시점에서도 여전히 도시에는 알 수 없는 살인 사건이 계속 벌어진다. 유리와 카이는 해당 살인 사건이 카이와 어떤 연관이 있다는 것을 알아내고, 둘은 함께 모험을 떠난다. 두 사람은 사건을 조사하며 이런저런 일들을 겪게 된다.

  후속권으로 진행될수록 "테네브리스"의 이야기는 유리의 개인적인 갈등과 고통에서 점차 정치적 분쟁, 전쟁, 여러 종족과 인물들 간의 갈등으로 더욱 스케일이 방대해지며 복잡해진다.

   1권의 메인 테마는 절망과 슬픔, 두려움과 과거.

Book I is mostly focused on Yuri's struggles and introduction of INASIL, the main world of TENEBRIS series. The title "The Fear from the Past" has ambiguous meanings , including Yuri's fear to face her trauma from the past, and it is also a tribute to "Shadow of the Past", which is chapter 2 of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Yuri(Korean: 유리) means "glass" in Korean.

Yuri is a skilled Nightstrider swordswoman and a Spirit-Soother(servant of the Deity of Darkness, the creator of Nightstriders). Being abused physically and verbally by her parents and all the people in the village, she had to go through painful childhood. She was saved by the Spirit-Soother master named Jinyul, and moved to the Crescent Temple. He trains her and teaches her how to wield a sword, and Yuri finally gets to forget all the unfortunate memories from her childhood, living peacefully with other spirit-soothers and orphans Jinyul brought to the Temple.

Her peaceful life starts cracking like broken pieces of glass, after encountering a beautiful sorcerer named Mir. He has dark brown hair and golden eyes, which is very rare among the Nightstriders. (Mir is an old korean word meaning Dragon.) Yuri falls in love with him for his kindness and love he shows her, and for he is the very first person to understand her pain, being abused by parents.

Jinyul is suspicious of Mir, and does not like the idea of Yuri hanging out with a sorcerer. It is not only against the doctrine of Spirit-Soothers, but also because he smells something is fishy about Mir. Yuri refuses to take advice from her master, and leaves the Temple with him, deciding to be his lover.

However, Yuri finds out later that Mir is actually a killer who murders innocent people just for fun. He locks her up in an abandoned basement after she figures out the truth, and tortures her with magic, forcing her to see the dead corpses, blood on the floor. She waits for her chance to escape from him and finally succeeds to return to the Crescent Temple.

Mir follows her, and murders half of the orphans and Jinyul, and even burns the whole Temple. The news spreads to the city as well as the Palace. The Emperor sends people to arrest him immediately for "sacrilege". Mir gets beheaded for the sins he made, by the order from the Emperor later.

Yuri goes through conflicts with the survivors from the murder event, mostly with Sunwoo, her best friend and the first orphan Jinyul brought to the Temple, for ignoring their master's advice. She leaves the Temple and becomes a wanderer for 4 years, going through emotional struggles and very strong suicidal feelings, blaming everything on herself.

She comes back to Crescent City, the Capital of the Empire 4 years later, and this is where the story begins.

Yuri notices there is some serious issue going on in the city, a story about serial murder cases happening. She feels horrified for how it sounds familiar to what she experienced with Mir in the past.

All the memories from the past bring her trauma and fear, and she decides to commit suicide on the cliffs at the cemetery of spirit-soothers. however, she was saved by some sorcerer - but his intention to save her from suicide attempt was not done out of good will; it was for her sacrilege to commit suicide at cemetery where servants of God rest. He tells her to die somewhere else and leaves immediately.

Yuri attempts to take her life by jumping off the cliff again, but she is too afraid and feels frustrated. She decides to continue her painful life and goes to look for a contract for some coins. 

However, she finds out "Kai", the client of the contract, is the sorcerer who saved her from suicide attempt. She signs to work for him. Later, they figure out the serial murder case going on in the capital has something to do with Kai. 

They investigate the case and go on dangerous adventures together. The story extends to political conflicts, wars and even more complicated events as it continues to book 2, 3, 4 and more.

Main Themes of Book I : Fear, Past, Despair and Trauma.

   테네브리스의 두 번째 이야기인 2권부터는 새로운 등장인물과 다른 종족들이 등장하기 시작하며, 1권의 이야기와 연계되어 유리가 본격적으로 모험을 시작하고, 각 집단들 사이의 정치적 갈등 등, 역경을 헤쳐나가며 성장하는 내용을 다룬다.

  자신을 괴롭히던 끔찍한 공포가 드디어 사라졌다고 생각한 유리. 하지만 과거의 망령은 여전히 그녀의 곁을 맴돌고 있다. 한번 시작된 소문 또한 끝날 기미가 보이지 않고, 선우는 유리에게 계속 냉랭한 태도로 일관하며, 그녀의 악몽을 완전히 잠재워줄 수 있는 흔적을 갖고 떠난 대마법사는 갑작스레 사라져버린다. 혼란 속에서 헤매는 유리 앞에 운명의 수레바퀴가 움직이기 시작한다. 유리는 다시 또 한번 싸워야만 한다. 자신을 덮쳐오는 제국의 손아귀에서 탈출하기 위해.

  2권의 메인 테마는 마법사들 사이의 정치적 갈등과 한층 더 거대해진 유리의 모험 이야기와 그녀의 성장.

  In Book II, there will be new characters and other races appearing in some chapters, and its main events are connected to the story of Book I.

  Yuri goes on dangerous adventures with Kai, to find out the secrets behind the Throne of the Empire. The scale of the story extends to political conflict between Sorcerers and Spirit-Soothers, and Yuri's emotional struggles with her situation, even worsening than Book I.

  She thought the fear was gone, however, the ghost still haunts her in her memories, still going through conflicts and arguments with Sunwoo after returning to the Capital. Kai disappears all of a sudden, leaving her no letters or words at all. And she is about to be in a great danger again. Now Yuri has nowhere to escape from her enemy haunting her. She must wield her blade to fight once more, to survive from the grasp of the Empire.

Main Themes of Book II : Political Conflicts between Sorcerers, Yuri's growth through adventures.

   3권은 1, 2권보다 국가적으로 스케일이 훨씬 거대해지고 방대해진 이야기를 다룬다. 여러 종족들 사이의 불화, 단절, 갈등과 전쟁, 다른 등장인물들의 복잡한 배경 서사, 그와 연계되는 여러 사건들을 겪게 되며 유리 또한 한층 더 성장하는 서사를 담고 있다.

   제국에서 벌어지는 이상한 사건들과 밤의 인간, 엘프들과의 불화에서 이야기가 시작되며, 유리는 이러한 사건들을 조사하고 파헤치면서 이나실이 품고 있는 끔찍한 비밀들에 대해서 알게 된다.

  3권의 메인 테마는 인간성과 종족들 사이의 불화, 전쟁, 그리고 이나실의 비밀.

  In Book III, the main story extends to a national scale with wars and discord between each races, becoming even more complicated than Book I and II.

  With Yuri growing up through pain and adventures, the struggles and pain of other characters will be described as well, and it all leads to the main theme of Book III.

Main Themes of Book III : Human Nature, Discord and wars between each races and The Secrets of INASIL.

   4권은 1권과 비슷하게 유리의 내면 중심으로 이야기를 다루고 있으나, 1권보다는 스케일이 크다.

   3권까지의 스토리 진행에서 풀리지 않은 몇몇 미스테리한 사건들을 조사하고, 1 - 2 - 3권에서는 등장하지 않았던 과거의 인물들이 등장하며,

유리는 가장 깊은 심연의 밑바닥에서 마음속 내면의 공포를 직접적으로 마주하게 된다.

   4권의 메인 테마는 "내면의 공포"와 "심연".

   Book IV is about Yuri's pain and struggles - her fear again. However, the scale of the story is much bigger than Book I. She goes on a new adventure on her own, to investigate some secrets still remain unsolved, and there will be new characters from the past, that never appeared in Book I, II, and III.

   Yuri encounters her greatest fear in the bottom of the deep abyss, which has been dwelling in her mind for so long.

   Main Themes of Book IV : Inner Fear and "Abyss".

   5 ~ 7권 또한 전작의 이야기들과 연계되어, 증오, 복수, 용서라는 테마 안에서 훨씬 거대해진 스케일의 이야기를 다룬다.

   성장한 이후에도 유리는 아직 이나실(테네브리스 세계관의 주 무대)에 남아있는 여러 사건들에 대해서 조사와 모험을 떠나는데, 이번에는 주술사나 어떤 "여검객", "여전사"로서가 아닌 두 아이의 어머니이자 보호자로서 행동하게 된다. 이 과정에서 여러 인물들과 마찰을 빚는다.

   이야기가 진행되며 공포, 내면의 두려움, 용서, 증오, 우정, 사랑, 배신, 희망 등의 여러 테마들이 비로소 하나로 모이고 어우러지며, 그녀에게 극복해야 할 "테네브리스"의 마지막 과제가 주어진다.

  5 ~ 7권의 메인 테마 : 증오, 용서, 복수.

  The main themes of Book V - Book VI - Book VII are Hatred, Revenge and Forgiveness.

   Seemingly Yuri has solved all the mysterious secrets of Inasil, finally living a peaceful life; However, she again figures out there's still something yet remains unsolved in the world. New conflicts spread, and she goes on a new adventure for one last time, and this time, as a mother of two children. A protector of someone so dear to her.

   As the story continues to the climax, all the main themes of TENEBRIS gather as one such as Fear, Trauma, Hope, Faith, Death and Life, Forgiveness, Hatred, Friendship and more. 

   Yuri faces the one last challenge of "TENEBRIS", to overcome in the end.
